Etymology & Vedic Roots

The surname Dev is derived from the classical Sanskrit roots associated with "Dev Brahmin" often refers to the Devrukhe Brahmin community, one of the oldest Marathi-speaking Brahmin groups in Maharashtra that settled near Ratnagiri. Other contexts include the Devanga community (sometimes called Deva Bhramana) or individuals with the surname/name "Dev" who are of the Brahmin caste. Devrukhe Brahmins: Traced back to Deshastha Brahmins from the Western Ghats who settled in Devrukh, Ratnagiri, during the 15th-century famine. Devanga Community: Traditionally weavers who claim Brahmin status, interpreting their name to mean "Body of the God".. Early records indicate that members of this clan were the primary custodians of the Yajurveda, Rigveda in the historical provinces of North India, Odisha, Nepal.
